When is a stylish tie essential for men?

There are many occasions or events where a tie is indispensable due to its elegance. At a wedding, it's not just the groom who is expected to have an elegant and neat appearance; male guests are also expected to wear a suit, a well-ironed shirt, and, most importantly, an exquisite tie to complete the perfect outfit. At funerals, it is a matter of respect towards the deceased and their relatives for men to appear in appropriate attire, with a black tie being a must. For galas or graduation balls, you have more flexibility in choosing a tie. You can opt for a plain tie or choose a playful dotted or striped tie. A theater performance, on the other hand, is always a bit more conservative, which should be reflected in your fashion choices. Plain ties or subtly patterned ties are the right choice here. In the office, there are no limits to your creativity. You can also try narrow ties or knitted ties. As you can see, the tie remains an integral part of elegant men's fashion, just as it always has been. Designers always follow the latest trends to ensure every man finds the right tie for himself.

Ties through the ages!

The constant evolution in men's fashion hasn't spared ties either. In past years, almost everywhere you looked, you would see wide ties with over 10 cm in width, as this was considered modern and a sign of value at the time. Narrow ties were often mocked. Today, the narrow tie is seen as the more modern model and is no longer worn just by young men. Even in the upper echelons of large companies, narrower ties of about 8 cm are now preferred over wider ties. Among younger tie-wearers, narrow ties with a 6 cm width are now the standard. But it's not just the width of ties that has changed over time; the materials have evolved as well. Silk remains the gold standard, as its fine, smooth surface makes tying a knot very easy, but designers' creativity knows no bounds. Today, knitted ties made from cotton, polyester, wool, or viscose are also in demand. Regular ties made from cotton or velvet are also becoming increasingly popular. In areas where durability and price are important, such as in hospitality, microfiber ties are preferred.

Ties and their patterns

Tie and pocket square patterns can be divided into seven types: Solid ties, also known as plain ties, are classic ties and are great for patterned shirts and suits. The plain tie can further be divided into plain satin or plain with texture. Solid satin ties have a very smooth, texture-free surface, while textured plain ties may have visible stripes or weaves on the surface. Allover patterned ties are completely and evenly covered with a pattern, such as symbols or figures. For everyday occasions, such a pattern can be appropriate, but it might not be suitable for festive events. Polka dot ties tend to be casual and laid-back. A tie with dots does not suit every outfit. Large polka dot ties are more suitable for leisure than for the office. A tie with very small dots, however, can be worn as a business tie in the office. Striped ties have a bit more dynamism and are more playful and lively. Striped ties are traditionally worn in the office and are generally considered business ties in professional settings. Very finely striped ties appear more elegant than those with wide stripes and are therefore better suited for business meetings. Paisley ties are very traditional and elegant for special occasions, such as weddings. Paisley refers to elliptical patterns that are narrower on one side and rounded on the other. With paisley-patterned ties, you are always dressed classically yet elegantly. Checked ties can be divided into several groups. There is the so-called Glen check, which is a very fine check pattern created by a special weaving technique. The Prince of Wales check is a Glen check pattern overlaid with a more contrasting and coarser check. The Vichy check is the classic check pattern, also known as the "farmer's check," which features a checkerboard look typical of checkered ties. Finally, there is the Scottish pattern, known in English as tartan or plaid. Baroque ties are, like paisley ties, very traditional and elegant. The patterns on baroque ties are inspired by Renaissance art from the period between 1600 and 1750, making them very stylish.

Care and storage of your tie

When storing your tie, make sure not to fold it to prevent creases. Ties should be stored hanging or rolled up. Always untie the knot to avoid unsightly creases. If your tie gets dirty, please take it to a dry cleaner or gently blot the stain. Do not put the tie in the washing machine, as the lining could become distorted and cause unsightly waves on the tie.

How to tie a tie

We have detailed instructions for tying a tie and the most common knots on our information pages. Here is just a brief introduction to what you should consider when tying a tie. The choice, size, and shape of the knot depend on the wearer's build. A slim man should choose a narrower knot, while a larger man should opt for a wider one. For very tall men, a wider knot requires more material, which reduces the length of the tie. To ensure that tall men can still tie a proper knot and have the tie reach the belt, we recommend using an extra-long tie for those taller than 185 cm.
